      I want, and all scientists want, to make a difference to our understanding of Nature and perhaps, if we are lucky, to improve people’s lives through discovery. For example, I feel my greatest success was, many years ago, showing how certain chemicals (“morphogens”) change the way embryonic cells develop. This made big news in my field of science at the time, and now it is part of the progress that is being made in using stem cells to repair damage in the body.
