Hi brady, yes science is definitely important in football.
One way I can think of is the physiotherapy and nutrition of the players, and also it is used in planning training so that the body is best able to perform.
It is also used to design football boots, for example – science of how the body moves and the forces that are put on the feet during playing is used to make boots that help the player perform.
I’m sure there are a lot of other ways, maybe other people have good suggestions!
I think Katherine is right – or at least should be right, but it is unclear how many teams really use science or instead rely on the coach’s “instinct”.
I do know that in the USA, there was a baseball team that really took a scientific approach to recruiting new players. They picked some players that others thought were not very good and were extremely successful. Since then, all the baseball teams have become more scientific in the way they get new players. Perhaps this revolution is still waiting to happen in football.
