That is a good question. I have to say that personally, I have never been aware of a situation where being a girl has held me back. The situation of women in science has improved amazingly in the last twenty years or so. There is still a lot of progress needed though, as women often earn less money then men. There certainly arent enough girls going into science today, although more and more are, which is brilliant.

Hi brady, as Carys says, a good question! I don’t think that I have had to do anything extra being a girl than the boys that I knew at school or at university. There were quite a lot more boys on my university course than girls (some people might say that is a good thing!). There were still plenty of girls though, so I didn’t feel like I was on my own at all.

Of course, right across all sorts of types of careers (not just science) women earn less than men on average and fewer of them get to the top management jobs. But I think things are loads better than they were and they are still improving all the time. I think things will improve even more in the future.

For me, being a girl had never hold me back on anything either but I do think it might be slightly different for me being a psychologist where 80% of the students are actually girls. Especially in child psychology you will find that more girls are doing research than boys so maybe I just picked the right subject. 🙂
